Welcome to the website of Knowle Probus Club,
serving the Knowle area of Solihull, West Midlands, UK.

What is Probus?

The Probus movement started in the 1960's and grew out of the Rotary Club organization.

A notable Rotarian, Fred Carhill, of Welwyn Garden City Rotary Club conceived the idea of a club for retired professional and businessmen.

The title PROBUS was derived from the words PROfessional and BUSiness.

The lapel badge originated at Bromsgrove in 1972 and the first badge struck in the Jewellery Quarter.

Today there are well over 1500 clubs in the UK and in other countries.

Similarly, Knowle Probus Club was born out of the Knowle and Dorridge Rotary Club, when a 'formation meeting' was held in March 1980.

The following month an inaugural meeting of Knowle Probus Club was held at the 'Red Lion' under the chairmanship of Eric Lyons, and officers were duly elected.

Ted Lea was the first Chairman. Thirty-six Founder Members were present at this inaugural meeting and one Founder Member still enjoys the fellowship of the Club - today.

Eric Lyons presented the Club with a personal gift of visitors book, Probus pins and the Chairman's medallion of office.
